Netherlands 3 England 1 (after extra time): England errors hand Oranje Nations League final spot

Kyle Walker s own goal and Ross Barkley s mistake in extra time saw Netherlands earn a 3-1 win against England that books a place in the inaugural Nations League final for Ronald Koeman s men.

Marcus Rashford s first-half penalty opened the scoring in a low-quality affair in Guimaraes, the striker converting a penalty he won when clumsily brought down by Matthijs de Ligt.

The Ajax captain made amends in the second half with a towering header to level the scores before England substitute Jesse Lingard had what seemed a winner ruled out for offside with seven minutes to go.

In the added period Netherlands won the game in farcical fashion, Walker diverting the ball into his own goal after an awful error by his Manchester City team-mate John Stones, before Barkley s …

Lacazette tested goalkeeper Nick Pope with a close…

Real Salt Lake v Portland Timbers: Neville backs ´MVP level´ Evander for more success

Phil Neville heaped praise on Portland Timbers star man Evander and has urged him to bring his fighting spirit to their clash with Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

The Timbers have lost just one of their last four MLS matches, though that did come in their last road match against Colorado Rapids.

They sit eighth in the Western Conference after beating leaders LA Galaxy 4-2 in midweek.

It was 37 minutes in until the first effort on target, Greenwo…

Mbappe snuffs out the dying embers of Barcelona´s greatness

Returning from knee ligament damage two months ahead of schedule having not played since November, Gerard Pique probably wanted to ease his way into proceedings.

Inside the first minute, Paris Saint-Germain s masterful playmaker Marco Verratti floated a ball over the top of the Barcelona backline and Kylian Mbappe already had Pique in his rear-view mirror.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen tore out of his penalty area and ultimately averted the danger by careering in to make a wild, sliced clearance.

Welcome back to the Champions League, Gerard.  All the best.

As a high-octane first half unfolded in the plum Champions League last-16 tie, Ronald Koeman s gamble in wheeling out his most experienced centre-back began to make sense. Maybe delaying the inevitable in a 4-…
